If you've recently learned about the existence of a household appliance referred to as a sump pump, you might be wondering how a sump pump works, and what it's needed for.

Sump pumps are needed to help protect basements from flooding. Since the basement of a house is below ground, when the soil of the ground gets saturated with rain water, that water can leak into the basement. And leaking in the basement can cause thousands of dollars in damage.

Sump pumps are needed more in areas which have lots of flooding, or when the house is below the water table line. However they're useful as a precaution in any house which has a basement, since that basement is always at least partially underground.

A sump pump is a machine which sits in or above a small hole in the basement floor. The hole is referred to as the sump hole or sump pit, and it's designed to catch any water that might enter the basement of a home.

As water fills up the sump pit hole, the sump pump kicks on and starts pumping it out through various connected pipes. Sump pumps can drain into the house's main water drainage system, or drain directly outdoors away from the foundation of the home. This keeps the basement itself from getting flooded, because the water is actually diverted into the hole and then moved out by the sump pump.

Sump pumps usually have a float which triggers them to turn on and off. When the water rises in the sump pit hole, the sump pump float rises as well. When that float reaches a certain height, the sump pump automatically turns on and starts pumping the excess water out.

Sump pumps are usually wired into a house's main electrical system, but it's critical for them to have some kind of power backup as well. Many sump pumps use car style batteries as a power backup, but if you don't like the idea of having a battery in your basement, you can sometimes get a sump pump that is run off the water pressure in your home.

Regardless of what type of backup power system you choose for your sump pump, you need to be sure there actually is a backup. Sump pumps are most needed during storms and flooding, and these are common times for the electricity to go out as well. If the electrical power goes out and the sump pump doesn't have a backup power source, it will not be able to prevent flooding in your basement.

Some people use a five gallon bucket for their sump pit, and this can actually cause problems in the long run because there is not enough room for the sump pump to work properly. When the sump pit is not large enough, the sump pump's float can get stuck into position because the pump is holding it against the side of the pump. Making sure your sump pit is at least 18 inches across and 22 inches or more deep can keep this problem from happening.

Washing your clothes in cold water is great if you have cold-water detergent, but regular detergent is designed to work best with warm or hot water. If the water temperature of your washing machine is not properly regulated your clothes may not be getting as clean as they should.

Understanding how your washing machine regulates water temperature can help you determine if your washing machine is working properly. Selecting the temperature setting for your wash cycle doesnt guarantee the water temperature is correct.

Water enters your washer from separate hot and cold water taps in your home. Before making any unnecessary repairs, regulate the temperature of these two taps. In summer months your cold water will be warmer than in winter months, so you won't need the temperature of the hot water tap to be as high. You can adjust the temperature of the hot water tap by adjusting the temperature settings on your furnace or boiler.

After adjusting the temperature of the water, check the following:

-Make sure the hot and cold taps are completely open.

-Make sure the temperature selector on your washer is set to the correct setting.

-Make sure the hot and cold water hoses are correctly connected to your washer.

If the water temperature is still not correct, check the parts inside the washer that regulate water temperature. Some washers only allow hot or cold water to flow during certain cycles. Some models switch between hot and cold water, while others allow both hot and cold water to flow at the same time. (You can also look in the washer's manual for more information on how the water entering your washing machine is regulated.) The parts responsible for regulating the temperature of the water are the temperature selector switch and water inlet valve.

The temperature selector switch allows you to choose the temperature of the wash and rinse cycles. Some washers only have a few choices of water temperatures, and some washers have many choices. The temperature selector switch consists of electrical circuits and contacts that open and close depending on the water temperature selected.

The water inlet valve is located at the back of your washer and it's connected to the cold and hot water taps in your home. The water inlet valve contains two solenoids sometimes referred to as coils. One solenoid is for the hot water and one is for the cold water. The temperature selector switch regulates the opening and closing of the solenoids to control the flow of water through the valve. After the water passes through the solenoids, it leaves the valve through one common hose and fills your washer.

If there's a problem with your water inlet valve, the water temperature is affected. Find out how to examine, test, and replace your washer's water inlet valve in next weeks article Washer Woes: Part 2 - How to replace a water-inlet valve.

Don't buy a kitchen faucet filter without doing a little research. If you shop for price alone, you might end up buying a kitchen faucet with filter that does little or nothing to protect your family's health.

That's not to say that the most expensive kitchen faucet filter is the right choice. Ever-pure makes a kitchen faucet with filter that is highly effective, but because of the inclusion of a reverse osmosis step, the cost is nearly $800.

Reverse osmosis or RO is older technology. The only purification method that's older is distillation. When the systems were designed, the common chemical contaminants that are threatening our health were not a problem. Thus, neither method removes chemical contaminants.

In most cases, performance data for RO units does not specify the amount of reduction provided by the product. Ever-pure does say that their under the counter kitchen faucet with filter reduces lead to the "Federal Action Level". If the lead level in your home is above the federal action level, you need ion exchange. That step removes more than 99% of lead and copper, exchanging them for good tasting and healthy electrolytes, primarily sodium and potassium.

In most modern homes, lead content is below the federal action level, so a unit that does not further reduce it is of no benefit. The EPA "goal" is "zero" for lead. It's just that most facilities cannot achieve that goal.

At the other end of the price scale is the Brita kitchen faucet filter. At $34.95, the price is enticing, but the brand does not remove THMs, VOCs or MTBE. THM exposure has been the subject of numerous scientific studies this year, because exposure increases a person's risk of cancer. Some studies say that people exposed to THMs are twice as likely to have bladder cancer. Others say that there is a 40% higher incidence of colorectal cancer. A Canadian study estimates that there are 800 new cancer-cases each year, caused by THM exposure.

So, obviously you want a kitchen faucet with filter that removes THMs, but what about VOCs. Any system that removes THMs will also remove VOCs. Most of them are not carcinogens, although consumption can damage the function of your thyroid gland, causing metabolic disorders and growth problems in children.

Most people don't need a kitchen faucet filter that removes MTBE. But, if your tap water tastes really unpleasant, that could be the problem. It is probably not a carcinogen, but who wants to drink gasoline additives.

It is more commonly found in groundwater than surface water. So, if your source is a river, MTBE is probably not a problem. However, rivers have a high bacterial count that requires the use of several disinfection methods. THMs are byproducts of public disinfection methods. If you need a kitchen faucet with filter for chlorine removal, then you should also have one with certified THM-removal.

The best kitchen faucet filter costs less than $125 and sometimes even less. My favorite company also sells showerhead filters, another good idea.

If you're scared to death of the drugs found in drinking water , we compare the various water filter systems at http://www.best-water-filter-guide.com and show you which ones have been scientifically proven to remove the highest amounts of contaminants
