A lot of people are considering a water filtration system for home use, especially with all of the news that's come out lately about the quality of our water. And why not? Municipal water treatment plants are not up to the task of filtering out today's contaminants--so, we have to filter our water ourselves!

Most of the filtration technology used today in municipal treatments plants was invented in the 19th century. Some of it early in the 20th century.

Before municipal water filtration, waterborne disease outbreaks were common. Cholera killed thousands.

We no longer have outbreaks of diseases like cholera due to lack of water filtration, that's the good news. The bad news is that the whole ball game has changed.

Now, we have organic waterborne pathogens like cryptosporidium that can pass right through your city's water filtration system. There was actually a cryptosporidium outbreak in Milwaukee that sickened over 4,000 people. That was in 1993!

Microorganisms are not the only problem.

Studies have been done recently that have found over 2,000 carcinogens in our nation's water supplies. In another study, of 29 cities studied all 29 of them had at least one pesticide in their water. One city even had three!

We live in a world made possible by over 80,000 synthetic chemicals, most of them invented in the past fifty years. Chemicals that make our lives possible have to go somewhere once they're used. Many of them end up in our water.

Think about it! Our planet's water is a closed system. At some point all we're doing is recycling the same water over and over again.

No wonder so many people are considering a home drinking water filtration system.

(In case you're thinking that bottled water is better, it's not. Most bottled water is straight from the tap!)

The only issue is what kind of filtration system do you buy?

There are a number of methods for filtering water--ultraviolet radiation, reverse osmosis, granular-activated carbon, to name a few.

The number one mistake people make when buying a water filtration system is buying the wrong type!

Some of these technologies are better than others. For instance ultraviolet radiation only kills organic material. It does nothing for those traces of prescription drugs that are routinely making their way into our water supplies.

Reverse osmosis is good, but actually it filters out stuff that you really would rather be left in. For instance, minerals like calcium need to be present in the water you drink. Calcium and a host of other minerals are central to your health and well-being.

Also, you need to think about exactly what water you want to filter.

Do you need to just filter your drinking water, your drinking and cooking water--or do you even need to filter the water you bathe and shower in?

It should be clear that a home water filtration system is no longer a luxury, but is now a necessity!

These are all important decisions that will have a big long-term impact on your health.

The best way to make sure that you're buying the right type of water filtration system is to find an informative website where you can get all the up-to-date information you need to make these critical decisions for you and your family.
